"Cool Pose" a case study of the relationship between Hip-Hop Culture and racial oppression.
Cool Pose is term that was coined in the 50s and 60s by Jazz and soul artists to challenge dominant cultural assumptions of masculinity that offered a self-constructed blackness.
That was a powerful symbol of manhood as an alternative to the dominant discourse.
Like the Jazz predecessors, Hip-Hop artists and Hip-Hop culture in general embody and express a masculinity that explicitly rejects constructions of both race and gender.
The hyper-masculine swagger of Hip-Hop personalities, like the assertive manhood exhibited in cool pose demonstrates to the dominant culture that the black male is a survivor despite of the realities of racial oppression.
